What Is a Tolerance Break?
A tolerance break, commonly called a ‘t-break’, is a planned period of abstaining from cannabis to allow your body’s endocannabinoid system to reset. If you’ve noticed that you need significantly more product to achieve the same effect you used to get from much less, your cannabinoid receptors have likely adapted to the regular presence of THC. A break gives them time to recover.

The Science Behind It
THC works by binding to CB1 receptors in your brain. With frequent use, your body responds by reducing the number and sensitivity of those receptors, a process called downregulation. The result is reduced effects from the same dose. The good news is this process is reversible. Studies have shown that even a two-week abstinence period can meaningfully restore receptor sensitivity, and some research suggests significant recovery occurs in as little as 48 hours.
How Long Should Your Break Be?
It depends on how frequently and heavily you’ve been using. Light to moderate users may notice a difference after just 3 to 7 days. Regular daily users typically benefit from 2 to 4 weeks. Longer breaks of 30 days or more will produce the most dramatic reset and are worth considering if your tolerance has climbed particularly high. There’s no one-size-fits-all answer, your body will tell you when the reset is working.
What to Expect During a T-Break
The first few days can be uncomfortable for regular users. Common experiences include difficulty sleeping, mildly increased anxiety or irritability, vivid dreams (because REM sleep suppressed by THC comes back strongly), and changes in appetite. These symptoms are temporary and typically resolve within a week. Staying hydrated, exercising, and maintaining a regular sleep schedule can help significantly.
Coming Back to Cannabis After a Break
This is the important part: start low when you return. Your reset tolerance means products that previously felt mild will now be noticeably more effective. This is actually a great opportunity to explore lower-potency options, try products you might have overlooked before, or simply use less and spend less.
